About BCCI

The Billie Call Christian Institute, founded in 1991, embodies three assumptions in both its tradition and its daily practice:

• iPeople are capable of rational self-discipline — desirous of acting toward others with respect, kindness, concern, open-mindedness, and moral conviction.
• iiLearning is an expression of positive energy — it fulfills natural impulse and enriches life.
• iiiAuthentic learning flourishes in community — when people work, think, and collaborate within a diverse group.

As young people respond to these ideals — learning to trust and assert their own intellectual and moral powers as they develop — they acquire confidence in themselves and others, inspiring a productive adulthood. The belief that positive expectations produce positive virtues is fundamental to how the school operates.

We hold that every child contains inner strength, talents, and powers that can be liberated and nurtured. That belief calls for a teacher’s authority to be used not to suppress or constrain, but to provide the skills, opportunities, challenges, and encouragement that bring about the fulfillment of the individual — free to think and act in the world with responsible freedom.

In every area of the Ministry of Education curriculum, the school encourages substantial student commitment to reading, writing, enquiry, and focused discussion, in order to secure the factual knowledge and conceptual structures essential for intellectual competence. Schoolwork, however rigorous, need not be alienating or painful — nor should success be measured by comparison to others. Achievement is instead the result of a child’s natural powers of mind and body, exercised under proper stimulation and challenge, and it is meant to bring pleasure and happiness in its own right.
